Huawei has just released what it firmly believes is its best running watch yet, the Huawei Watch GT Runner 2, and it certainly looks like it’s going to give Apple and Garmin a run for their money.
It has plenty of features, including Huawei’s highly accurate TruSense heart rate sensor and algorithm, a smart Marathon mode for responsive training guidance, a route design similar to Garmin and Coros, and a redesigned 3D antenna array for better GPS accuracy.
While obviously not available in the US, the watch costs £349.99 in the UK (around $475 / AU$665).
Against Garmin
Since the GT Runner 2 claims to be more accurate than a Garmin, I tested it against my personal Garmin Epix Pro on a quick 3.4 mile round trip. For my full review, I’ll be testing it with the Apple Watch Ultra 3, alongside a Polar H10 heart rate monitor. Although the Garmin Epix Pro is older than the Garmin Fenix 8, it still has the up-to-date Elevate V5 heart rate sensor and records accurately in GPS when tested against the Apple Watch.
In this first test, the Huawei was light, bright (even in winter sun glare, its AMOLED screen was very easy to look at mid-ride), and compared favorably to the Garmin.
With only 30 meters of variation in distance and 8 bpm of difference in average heart rate (I would classify a difference of 10 bpm and less as not particularly statistically significant), it’s certainly close enough to the benchmark for the average runner. You can see the stats for both watches below. True precision enthusiasts and professional athletes will have to wait for my full review for more in-depth testing.
