Interior Minister informs Shehbaz of meetings in Rome and Poland; illegal migration to Europe down 47%

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif was briefed by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday about the outcome of his recent participation in two high-level multilateral meetings held in Europe.
Naqvi informed Shehbaz about his participation in a meeting of interior ministers of four countries in Rome, Italy, which was attended by his counterparts from Pakistan, Italy, Spain and Greece. He also informed the Prime Minister about a separate six-country meeting held in Poland, which was attended by the interior ministers of Pakistan, Poland, Latvia, Finland, Estonia and Lithuania.

The two conferences resulted in an agreement between the participating countries to expedite the issuance of legal work permits for Pakistani nationals, Naqvi told the prime minister.
Furthermore, he expressed Member States’ appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts to reduce the number of people traveling illegally to European countries – a figure which fell by 47% in a single year – as well as the measures taken to combat human trafficking.

On the bilateral front, Poland and Italy are expected to soon abolish the visa requirement for holders of Pakistani diplomatic and official passports, Naqvi informed Shehbaz. He also noted that a comprehensive plan to further strengthen Pakistan’s capacity in immigration and border security will be presented to the European Union as soon as possible.
Shehbaz praised the interior minister for his efforts. The meeting also discussed the country’s internal situation and the overall security landscape.
