Luke Grimes knew he signed with the Yellow stone the fallout would not be easy. He just didn’t expect that the hardest part would be picking up the phone.
Grimes reprises Kayce Dutton in Marshals, which premiered March 1 on CBS. But the beginning delivered a punch to the gut: Kayce’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), died following a cancer diagnosis.
Fans had already noticed the absence of Asbille in the list of actors. Now they know why.
Grimes admits he was “heartbroken.”
“It was like, ‘I don’t even know what it would be like to do this without her, what it would be like.’ Kelsey became one of my best friends,” he said. TV Insider.
“She’s the coolest actress I’ve ever worked with. She’s down to earth, sweet and nice to all the other cast and crew.”
Before accepting the script, he made a call.
“I found the courage to call. I didn’t know how she was going to feel,” Grimes said. “I had to see how she was doing.”
The conversation? Better than he feared.
“In true Kelsey fashion, she handled the situation like a pro and totally understood. She will do just fine.”
Creator Spencer Hudnut said the loss was necessary after Kayce and Monica’s peaceful end. “We had to turn his life upside down, get him off the ranch and into a new position,” he explained, adding that the storyline also highlights higher cancer rates on the reservations.
As painful as it may be, Grimes promises that the risk pays off: “The idea that was proposed to me was very, very good and very interesting and it really convinced me. »
