ISLAMABAD:
The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) unanimously approved the agreement for the application of safeguards to Unit 5 of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant (C-5), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ishaq Dar said on Tuesday.
Dar announced the approval of the agreement between the IAEA and Pakistan in a message published on the microblogging site X, formerly Twitter. The C-5 project aims to contribute to energy security, climate goals and sustainable economic growth.
“This important development reflects the international community’s continued confidence in Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and its compliance with global non-proliferation and safeguards obligations,” he said.
Unit 5 of the Chashma nuclear power plant will have a gross capacity of 1,200 MW(e). The pressurized water reactor is expected to become operational by 2030. Once completed, the unit will provide a substantial source of low-carbon electricity to Pakistan’s national grid.
