- Managers play a crucial role in how effectively organizations deploy AI
- HR teams must support managers and help unlock AI-related business impacts
- Companies also need to guide their employees on what to do with the time they save using AI.
Gartner revealed a new study that found most workers are reluctant to fully embrace AI, with around half (46%) of managers experimenting with artificial intelligence, compared to just a quarter (26%) of regular employees.
The research highlights that AI is not the silver bullet that will revolutionize workplace productivity, and that workers do not suddenly change the way they work after using AI aids.
This is even if they use AI tools: 86% of managers say they face some sort of challenge when it comes to encouraging teams to use technology.
It seems workers are not rushing to adopt AI
It seems that many workers lack guidance when it comes to using AI, and many organizations expect their employees to figure out how to use AI on their own. The Gartner report encourages managers to guide teams on how AI actually fits into their real-world processes.
Additionally, only 7% of companies surveyed provide guidance to workers on how they should use the time they save with AI.
Gartner also links employee hesitancy to layoffs: As many companies cut workforces in response to the rising costs and effectiveness of AI, workers may fear that a massive deployment of AI could threaten their jobs.
“Until now, HR has largely focused on empowering employees to explore, learn, and innovate with AI and has neglected the role of the manager in effectively using AI tools,” wrote Carmen von Rohr, senior director.
Looking ahead, the report urges HR departments to focus on supporting managers, seen as key drivers of AI adoption, with the right training, guidance and tools.
“Once employees have saved significant amounts of time through the use of AI, that saved time will need to be redeployed effectively,” von Rohr added, noting that HR should also help managers identify how to capitalize on the productivity benefits of AI to drive greater business impact.
