- Google released “a CLI for all Google Workspace”
- There is even a set of instructions specifically for OpenClaw
- This is “not an officially supported Google product…” at this time
Google has released a command line interface (CLI) on GitHub that makes it easier for AI agents to connect to Google Workspace apps like Gmail, Google Drive, and Docs/Sheets/Slides.
This shift clearly recognizes the rise of AI personal assistants, like OpenClaw, capable of acting autonomously on the user’s behalf.
Google even included a specific set of instructions for integrating with OpenClaw, which has been gaining traction on social media in recent weeks.
Google opens Workspace to OpenClaw and other AI agents
The company describes the launch as “a CLI for all of Google Workspace – designed for humans and AI agents.”
“Drive, Gmail, Calendar, and all Workspace APIs,” Google added, promising “40+ agent skills included.”
Since the tool also supports MCP integrations (an open standard established by Claude-maker Anthropic), this means that other applications like Claude Desktop can also access Workspace data and information.
Although AI integrations were previously available through multiple APIs, the CLI definitely streamlines the process as we begin to see a shift in how humans and AI agents interact with applications and data.
There is, however, a big problem. Google says it is “not an officially supported Google product,” so it should be used at the own risk of the person who chooses to do so. Nevertheless, the desire to open agentic AI access to its own applications is an important step for Google, indicating a desire to cooperate with third-party systems rather than keeping users tightly locked into its own ecosystem.
As for OpenClaw, it will “live in a foundation as an open source project” and will also benefit from support from OpenAI following OpenAI’s acquisition of OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger.
