ISLAMABAD:

President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday took seriously the deteriorating law and order situation in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly in Skardu, where violent protests have caused extensive damage to public and private infrastructure and disrupted normal life.

He said peaceful protest is a constitutional right but must be exercised within the law, a presidential press release said.

The president strongly condemned the wanton destruction and damage caused to the public. He said such actions are illegal and amount to serious criminal conduct under applicable law.
