Fake Iran War Videos Rack Up Millions of Views as AI Disinformation Explodes

An unprecedented wave of AI-generated disinformation about the US-Israeli war on Iran is sweeping across social media platforms.

AI videos are also monetized by online creators who rack up millions of views from the fabricated videos and images.

Since the day of the US-Israeli attack on Iran, social media has been flooded with false content.

Even an AI-generated video showing missiles hitting Tel Aviv was reposted by 300 people and shared tens of thousands of times.

Another video that quickly gained attention was of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa skyscraper burning.

To stem the tide of AI-generated content, X (formerly Twitter) has suspended creators who post AI-generated conflict videos without mentioning labels from its monetization program.

Although X tries to stop the sharing of fake videos, its AI chatbot fails to verify the content.

Some X users have turned to the platform’s AI chatbot Grok to find out whether content is original or AI-generated. But in many cases, the AI assistant qualified the AI content as real.

Experts have expressed concerns about the increase in AI-generated content as it leads to a lack of trust in verified information.

Mahsa Alimardani, of the Oxford Internet Institute, said: “Fake videos like these have a detrimental impact on people’s trust in the verified information they see online and make it much more difficult to document real evidence. »
