- OpenAI announced that ChatGPT adult mode is delayed again
- The update was originally supposed to arrive in December
- OpenAI says there are higher priority upgrades to work on at the moment
It was last October, when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman promised that ChatGPT would get an adult mode – for generating erotica and other similar types of content – but the initial December launch window has passed, and now we’re hearing that adult chat topics will be delayed even further.
An OpenAI spokesperson told Axios (via TechCrunch) that the company is “pushing back” the launch of adult mode to an unspecified time in the future. Right now, the spokesperson said, OpenAI engineers are working on “higher priority” updates.
These priorities include intelligence improvements, personality adjustments, and a “more proactive” attitude from ChatGPT. “We still believe in the principle of treating adults like adults, but it will take more time to achieve a good experience,” the spokesperson said.
We don’t know much about adult mode in ChatGPT, but OpenAI says it will only be available to accounts whose users have been verified to be over 18 – although there have been some early issues with the age detection feature.
Ethics in AI
The news comes as OpenAI is in the midst of a storm of controversy over AI ethics. The company’s decision to sign a deal with the US military has drawn heavy criticism due to concerns over mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, and figures suggest a significant number of ChatGPT users are leaving the app.
It’s not just about users: OpenAI’s head of robotics, Caitlin Kalinowski, resigned from the company over the Pentagon deal, and this is far from the first time OpenAI employees have voiced concerns about the company’s security policies.
With all of this in mind, it’s perhaps no surprise that OpenAI wants to avoid further debates about what AI should and shouldn’t be used for. As of now, there is no potential new launch date for ChatGPT adult mode.
The most recent ChatGPT upgrade we’ve seen is a new GPT-5.4 reflection model, rolled out just a few days ago and designed for more complex tasks. In the meantime, AI robots for adults are widely available, if you know where to look.
