Christian Bale had to set the record straight after a scene from his new film The Bride! sparked an unexpected comparison to his 1992 musical Newsand his reaction was as shocking as one would expect.
During an interview with BuzzFeed before the film’s release, a journalist pointed out that a particular moment of The Bride! reminded them of Bale’s early performances in the beloved Disney musical.
The 52-year-old was amused but quick to clarify.
“I never thought anyone would relate News has The Bride! It’s hysterical,” he said.
“But wait, big difference. News is a musical comedy. It’s not a musical.”
The scene in question involves movement, but Bale was keen to explain what really motivates him.
“It’s something where it’s just a ridiculously forceful, possessive expression,” he said.
“Which you’ll understand if you watch the whole movie, but it’s not a musical at all, you know?”
He described the sequence as “spontaneous” and noted that it involved heavy shoes rather than anything resembling dance attire, a “spontaneous protest dance that leads to serious protests with serious consequences,” as he put it.
As for his future musical ambitions, Bale was pretty definitive.
“I don’t think I’ll ever step foot in a musical again in my life,” he admitted, before covering himself slightly: “Sure, never say never, but almost never say never on this one.”
