James Cameron gives Avatar fans a warning for the upcoming third sequel.
The Oscar-winning director, 70, dropped a few hints Wednesday during a recent interview with Empire Magazine.
“It’s a tricky thing,” Cameron said when asked what to expect from the latest installment of the show. Avatar franchise.
“We might be getting high on our own supply here, and everyone who watches it [the new film] said: ‘F***, that’s not what I signed up for.’ “
“But if you don’t make courageous choices, you’re wasting everyone’s time and money,” he continued, adding: “That alone is not enough to create success, but it is necessary. You have to break the mold every time.
The veteran filmmaker also warned that some storylines in the upcoming sequel could take audiences to “places they don’t expect,” but added that those places “will feel earned.”
“We have some really clever action sets,” he told the outlet. “You can get angry in this movie. But what excites me as an artist who recently turned 70 and has done all this is not only the opportunity to start again, but also to reach a level of character and plot that you have never seen before in a Avatar movie.”
Cameron also gave an insider’s view on the production phase, saying the film is “in good shape.”
“We have doubled the number of shots completed at this point in the game compared to the second film. [and] the films are approximately the same length. So that puts us way ahead of the curve, which is something I’ve never, frankly, experienced before.
“We’re getting to the point where we’re actually getting good at it,” he said with a laugh.
Avatar 3: Fire and Ashes is scheduled to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
