ISLAMABAD:
A luxury vehicle worth Rs90 million was purchased for the Senate President from the Senate budget, confirmed Senate President Yousuf Raza Gilani.
As per details, the expensive vehicle was purchased from the Senate budget and has already reached the Senate Secretariat of Pakistan, sources said.
Contacted by Express News regarding the purchase, Gilani confirmed that the car had been purchased. “Yes, we bought the car from the Senate budget, but it was ordered in May last year,” he said.
He explained that the vehicle was ordered using savings from the previous year’s Senate budget. Gilani added that he tried to return the vehicle given the country’s current economic situation, but was told the car had already arrived.
Earlier in June, Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb had told Parliament that the Senate President and the National Assembly Speaker received a monthly salary of Rs 2.15 million.
At the time, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif opposed it, saying the massive increase in salaries of the Senate President, National Assembly Speaker and others amounted to “economic obscenity”.
