- Hybrid environments, tool proliferation and poor team coordination reduce observability
- IT teams agree that observability is essential, 90% believe AI could help them
- AI is not without the usual challenges, however
New data from Solarwinds claims that around three-quarters (77%) of IT teams lack the visibility they need in hybrid environments, illustrating the added complexity involved in a mix of on-premises and cloud environments.
Modern, scalable infrastructure appears to be outpacing monitoring and observability tools, and many have had to resort to more solutions. However, 55% of respondents say tool proliferation is now also a problem.
And it’s not just the tools that are to blame: three in four say poor coordination between teams also further limits observability.

IT teams quickly lose observability
Despite the current bad situation, two-thirds (64%) say that full visibility is important for success, and that there is a clear need for proactive protection rather than reactive “firefighting.”
But while systems and environments show no signs of simplifying anytime soon, artificial intelligence may well hold the key to success. AI already helps reduce noise by speeding up operations, but 90% of respondents now believe it could also help them improve observability.
Some of the most relevant use cases for AI include automating incident prioritization (47%), accelerating root cause analysis (45%), predicting capacity and performance issues (45%), and reducing alert fatigue (45%). Improving efficiency could also lead to significant savings.
“AI should do more than reduce alerts: it should refine prioritization, streamline workflows, and give teams the space to focus on strategy instead of scrolling through dashboards,” wrote Abigail Norman, SolarWinds senior director of product marketing.
That said, businesses still face major challenges when adopting AI, with security concerns leading the way (47%). Skills gaps (42%), technological complexity (41%), employee reluctance or resistance (37%), and budget constraints (33%) are also limiting factors.
Going forward, it is clear that hybrid infrastructure and the growing range of tools will continue to make observability difficult, hence the need for more powerful and unified tools.
