- NordVPN partners with Internews to support activists and journalists
- Nord tools will be integrated into Internews’ digital security programming
- The first 100 people to donate £35 will receive a 6-month NordVPN plan
NordVPN – currently the top-rated provider in our best VPN guide – has partnered with the non-profit Internews to strengthen the digital security of journalists, civil society organizations and human rights defenders.
In fact, state-sponsored surveillance, censorship, and cyberattacks are on the rise, making the need for secure online communications more crucial than ever for those on the front lines. This collaboration aims to distribute vital privacy technologies to at-risk communities operating in the world’s most dangerous and restrictive environments.
According to the Internews announcement, the partnership will help people facing intense information manipulation and harassment maintain access to reliable information and communicate securely without fear of pervasive surveillance.

This is not the first time the two organizations have worked together; Nord Security (NordVPN’s parent company) has already equipped its local partners in Sudan and Afghanistan with tools to minimize surveillance risks and circumvent censorship.
Now, the new initiative builds on that foundation by directly integrating Nord’s secure tools and “Changemakers” training slides into Internews’ global digital security programming.
“Safe digital spaces provide a lifeline for people working under threat,” said Meera Selva, CEO of Internews Europe. “Supporting NordVPN allows us to provide journalists and activists with trusted tools that reduce their exposure to surveillance and censorship and ultimately help them continue their vital work.”
Why journalists need a VPN more than ever
Operating in restrictive contexts shaped by conflict and censorship means that secure communication is no longer a luxury for journalists; it is an absolute necessity for survival.
A virtual private network (VPN) encrypts internet traffic and hides the user’s IP address, making it more difficult for hostile regimes or malicious actors to track their physical location or monitor their online activities.
NordVPN brings significant technical strength to this cause. The provider has servers across 178 locations in 129 countries, as well as specialized privacy features like Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, and its signature Threat Protection Pro, which actively blocks trackers, malicious websites, and downloads containing malware.
The move follows a similar path blazed by its sister brand, Surfshark, which also recently partnered with Internews to provide at-risk individuals with free VPN access.
To encourage broader public engagement in digital security, Internews and NordVPN have also launched a joint donation campaign. The first 100 people to donate £35 to the charity will receive a 6-month NordVPN subscription as an incentive.
Additionally, both organizations will share the stage at the upcoming RightsCon 2026 event to highlight the importance of responsible technology in protecting vulnerable communities.
“Our work together highlights a shared commitment to building digital resilience around the world,” said Akvilė Liudžienė, Head of ESG at NordVPN. “By combining Internews’ frontline expertise with Nord’s secure technologies, we can help protect those most at risk.”
