PESHAWAR:

With Eid just a few days away, the city’s bustling markets are witnessing a heavy rush of shoppers eager to complete their festive preparations. After purchasing new clothes, residents are now turning their attention to Peshawari’s iconic chappals, a traditional staple that complements the Eid attire.

The historic Jahangirpura Market remains the epicenter of authentic Peshawari chappal shopping. From morning until late at night, crowds, especially children accompanying elders, throng the stores. Shoppers are selecting colorful variants to match their new outfits, favoring popular styles such as ‘panjey daar’, band high karam, single sole and double sole designs.

This rise reflects the deep cultural attachment to these handcrafted leather sandals, known for their durability and distinctive Peshawari craftsmanship.

However, inflation has pushed prices up considerably. Sellers report that the cost of raw materials, including leather and other components, has increased sharply. Compared to last year, prices have increased by Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000 per pair.

What once cost Rs 1,500 now sells for around Rs 2,000; pairs previously priced at Rs 2,000 are now Rs 3,000, and those priced at Rs 3,000 have jumped to Rs 5,000 or more. Traders attribute the rise directly to rising material costs amid broader economic pressures.

Despite the higher prices, demand remains robust, underscoring the enduring popularity of chappal during Eid celebrations.

In a modern twist, Peshawari chappals are increasingly available online. Dedicated websites and e-commerce platforms allow customers to browse designs, make payments and receive home delivery across Pakistan. This change has made it easier for those living outside Peshawar to purchase authentic pairs without visiting the Jahangirpura market, with several specialist web pages catering specifically to this demand. Many expats and out-of-town residents are opting for online shopping to secure their Eid essentials.

As Eid approaches, Peshawar’s combination of tradition, style and ever-changing retail options continues to define Peshawar’s festive shopping scene.
