- They also continued to conduct research “throughout the project.”
Ubisoft revealed that it carried out extensive research for the development of Shadows of Assassin’s Creed and I even took guided trips around Japan for inspiration.
That’s according to art director Thierry Dansereau, who discussed the process at an event to celebrate the game’s first anniversary.
“For almost all Assassin’s Creed games, there are organized trips, so I was one of the lucky ones [on the team] who had the chance to go there,” Dansereau said.

“We went on the tour and visited most of the locations in the game. It was a pretty intense tour, I have to be honest, we visited two to three locations a day, and we had experts with us, explaining pretty much everything we asked.”
Along with the guided tours, the development team also visited museums, watched films, read books about Japan and its culture, and viewed “thousands of photos and videos” for even more research.
“Of course we make video games, but for Assassin’s Creed we try to be credible as much as possible,” he added, “and then it’s also a work of fiction, but we have to have a good understanding of the foundations of what we’re doing, which is why we spend a lot of time doing research.
“Actually, to be honest, we did research throughout the project,” he said. “But at first it’s hard…”
During the same event, voice actor Tongayi Chirisa, who played Yasuke in Shadowsdiscussed his performance and revealed that he was completely new to acting when he accepted the role.
The game recently celebrated its first anniversary and is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
