KARACHI:
The Sindh cabinet’s subcommittee on austerity has ordered that 60 percent of government vehicles in several departments be taken off the road, in a bid to reduce fuel consumption and government spending.
Sub-committee Chairman and Sindh Chief Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that out of a total of 2,837 vehicles in over 47 departments, 1,524 vehicles were taken off the road. The departments concerned include health, finance, school education, energy and anti-corruption.
He added that in some departments the reduction exceeded 65 percent, while all vehicles of the Interprovincial Coordination Department were completely grounded. This decision was taken in the face of rising fuel costs, with the aim of significantly reducing public spending.
Sharjeel said the move aims to reduce energy consumption, reduce public expenditure and ensure efficient use of resources. He stressed that the provincial government strictly implements its austerity policy in the national interest.
He further noted that these measures will not only reduce expenditure but also improve management of government resources, resulting in savings of millions of rupees in fuel costs.
All departments have been ordered to fully comply with the policy, while essential and emergency vehicles will continue to remain operational as needed.
