Broader economic factors, such as the recent slowdown in growth of the video game industry and lower adoption of current-generation consoles, as well as heavy competition from other forms of entertainment, have also been cited as causes. Interestingly, Sweeney specifically clarifies that the layoff is not “AI-related” as some might fear, and said the company wants to “have as many awesome developers” as possible.
This comes with identified cost savings worth $500 million, focused on contracting, marketing and closing vacancies.
This news comes just weeks after Epic Games announced that it would be increasing the cost of the game. Fortnite the in-game currency V-Bucks to “help pay the bills”. The new prices took effect on March 19, 2026 and mean that a standard $8.99 purchase only grants 800 V-Bucks instead of the previous 1,000.
“The cost of running Fortnite has increased significantly,” the company noted in its blog at the time.
