Islamabad calls verdict a ‘grave miscarriage of justice’, calls for global action for Kashmiri rights
Pakistan on Wednesday condemned the life sentence handed down to Kashmiri political leader Aasiya Andrabi by a Delhi court, calling the decision a miscarriage of justice and part of a broader crackdown on dissent in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Pakistan “categorically rejects the award of a life sentence to Aasiya Andrabi, a prominent political leader of Kashmir.”

The ministry also condemned “the heavy sentences of 30 years in prison handed down to his two associates, Ms. Fehmeeda Sofi and Ms. Nahida Nasreen.”
According to the statement, the court delivered its verdict under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which Pakistan has called a “draconian law.”
The Ministry of External Affairs said the decision “constitutes a serious miscarriage of justice and reflects the continued suppression of fundamental rights in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).”

Pakistan views the move as part of what it calls a broader pattern of politically motivated prosecutions aimed at silencing dissenting voices and intimidating those who defend the rights of the Kashmiri people.
“The conviction raises serious concerns about due process, judicial independence and compliance with international human rights obligations,” the statement said.
The ministry described Andrabi as a long-time advocate of the Kashmir cause, adding that her conviction and sentence highlight what it calls the shrinking space for political expression and civil liberties within the IIOJK.
Pakistan said such actions risked exacerbating regional tensions and undermining prospects for peace and stability in South Asia.

The Ministry of External Affairs urged the international community, including the United Nations and global human rights organizations, to immediately take note of this development and hold India accountable for its actions in the IIOJK.
Pakistan also called for the protection of the “political, social and human rights of the Kashmiri people, including the right to freedom of expression and a fair trial.”
Reaffirming its stance, Islamabad reiterated its “unwavering support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just struggle for self-determination, as provided for in the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions”.
