- Oppo has shared details about the Find N5, which will likely be renamed the OnePlus Open 2 outside of China.
- The Oppo Find N5 will be extremely thin, with barely enough space for a USB-C port
- It will also have an IPX9 water resistance rating, which is very rare on phones.
The OnePlus Open was one of the best foldable phones of 2024, so the company could have released a similar successor and likely seen it hold up well against the competition. Instead, it looks like we’ll be in for some big improvements.
In various Weibo posts spotted by Android Authority, Oppo product manager Zhou Yibao has shared images and information about the Oppo Find N5, and based on past form, it’s likely that the OnePlus Open 2 will simply be a rebranded version of this device.
Based on this information, this is not a bad thing, as the Oppo Find N5 will be incredibly thin, with Yibao stating that “thinness is not the limit of the Find N5, but the limit of the charging port.” You can see that this is the case in the images below, with only the tiniest sliver of bezel on either side of the USB-C port.
This means that this is probably the thinnest foldable phone yet, and it will be impossible to make a foldable phone much thinner than this without sacrificing the charging port, or only half without the port is much thinner, which could make the phone appear unbalanced.
Some of the other images also highlight how thin this phone is, with a thickness similar to that of four credit cards when the phone is unfolded, and much thinner than an iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Unfortunately, exact dimensions haven’t been provided, but the OnePlus Open 2 will almost certainly be a bit thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which is arguably its main rival – at least until the Samsung Galaxy Z launches Fold 7.
Impressively water resistant
And this is not the only way for the Oppo Find N5 – and therefore probably also the OnePlus Open 2 – to beat the Galaxy Z Fold 6, since Zhou Yibao also revealed that it has resistance to the water IPX6, IPX8 and IPX9.
It’s the number at the end that’s relevant here, and most phones have an “8” rating at best, meaning they can be submerged at least 1.5 meters deep in fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Having a “9” rating also means that this phone is also protected against high temperature and high pressure water jets.
It’s not too surprising that this level of protection could be offered, since it was also a feature on the OnePlus 13, but it’s not present on most phones – including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which has an “8” but not an “8”. 9′ dimension.
However, the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s full rating is IP48, with the “4” meaning it provides protection against solid objects larger than 1mm. The Oppo Find N5 – and probably also the OnePlus Open 2 – don’t have such protection, so this is one area where Samsung has this rumored model beaten.
It will be interesting to see if the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 can match this in terms of thinness and water resistance, but we doubt it.
As for when one of these phones will launch, we expect the Oppo Find N5 to be revealed in February, but probably only for China. We expect the OnePlus Open 2 to launch globally soon after, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 likely won’t land until July.
