Why should I have a regular backup?

There are a number of reasons to keep a regular backup of your important data – some of which you may have already experienced.

For example, you could be the victim of a ransomware attack that steals or encrypts all of your data, leaving you in the difficult situation of risking payment to get your data back (NOT RECOMMENDED), or simply continuing with your life wishing you had made a backup.

Your device might suddenly crash or your storage drive might get corrupted, and again, you’ll wish you’d made a backup.

Hindsight is 20-20, so make a backup today so you don’t start wishing you had made one tomorrow.

WD_Black 4TB SSD gets an even bigger discount

As part of World Backup Day, the team is looking for the best storage deals we can find. And this one is worth mentioning.

Last week, we highlighted the WD_Black SN7100 4TB SSD on sale during Amazon’s Big Spring Sale – but since then, its price has dropped even further, now at $590 (was $1,380) at Amazon.com.

At the time, we said the deal “was so good it made me double-check that I couldn’t see anything.” This drive uses a PCIe Gen4 interface and achieves read speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s with write speeds of up to 6,700 MB/s. These numbers translate to fast file transfers and faster load times.

In the UK, the 4TB variant costs £580 at Amazon.co.uk.

Wait, what is “backup”?

A backup is an exact copy of data stored elsewhere for redundancy purposes. A bit like sending yourself a document by email so you always have a copy online. We have personally tested many options when it comes to reliable backups.

In the modern world, a backup can be kept in cloud storage, on a NAS storage system in a different location, or even just on a USB stick.

For most backups, the copied files only exist as a snapshot of the data at the time it was copied (unless the service you are using regularly syncs the data). This is why regular backups are so important.

The best part is that there are tons of free backup software out there – and we highly recommend starting the backup process as soon as possible.

Year after year, Google Trends has shown a sharp rise for World Backup Day since its launch – always towards the end of March – but the lead-up to World Backup Day 2026 appears to have generated much greater interest than usual.

Perhaps some of the major data breaches, ransomware attacks, and information-stealing malware campaigns of 2025 have made people pay more attention to their data.

The World Backup Day Pledge

Somewhere in its history, World Backup Day developed a semi-official pledge: “I solemnly swear to backup my important documents and precious memories on March 31. #WorldBackupDay.”

Of course, this is not legally binding. Which is a shame, because the world would be a much better place, both for consumers and for businesses and large companies. Like an oath of office, Chief Data Officers should make it an annual tradition.

By the way, what is World Backup Day?
