- Users in the US can now change their Google account email address
- This comes after Google announced the change in December 2025.
- When you change your old Gmail address, it becomes another email address.
Just three months after Google revealed plans to roll out the ability to change your Gmail ID, the tech giant has put those plans into action by offering it to Google account owners in the United States.
In January, we reported an update to Google’s English support page indicating that the rollout would begin that week, although Google reiterated that it would be very gradual. It was first rolled out to regions outside the US, although it’s unclear how available it will be: I’m based in the UK and the option to update my email address is still not available.
“Your digital identity just got an upgrade. You can now change your Google Account username (i.e. the part before @gmail.com), which you use to sign in to apps and services like Gmail, Photos, Drive and more,” Google officially announced. “We started rolling this out last year to help your account grow with you,” the company added.

If you have the option to change your Gmail address, there are a few things you should be aware of before updating it. First, your old Gmail ID will become an alternate address, but you will still receive emails to both the old and new addresses. If you’re worried about losing data like messages, emails, and photos, don’t worry, it won’t be affected, but Google recommends backing up your data just in case.
When it comes to signing in to new devices or Google’s list of services, you can use your old Gmail address or your updated address, and you can revert to your old email address at any time, according to Google. That said, you’ll have to wait 12 months before you can change your Gmail address again, so make this one count.
How to update your Gmail address
Whether you update your Gmail address in a browser or on an Android or iPhone/iPad device, the process is pretty much the same. All you have to do is go to your computer or mobile browser and use the link myaccount.google.com/google-account-email.
From there, go to “Personal Info,” then tap “Email,” then “Google Account Email.” Below, find “Change Google Account Email Address”. If this option is not available, it may not be possible to change your Google account email address.
If you’re able to take this step, Google suggests investigating potential issues before updating your email address, which you can find on Google’s support page. If none of the issues concern you, you are free to change your Gmail ID.
When you enter a new username (since it is not already in use by another Google account), click “Change email address”, then click “Yes, change email address”, and follow the next steps. Once everything is finished, you’re free to show off your brand new Gmail address and say goodbye to your old, slightly more embarrassing username.
