Body camera footage of Tiger Woods’ arrest for drunk driving at Jupiter Island, Florida, last Friday showed the 15-time major winner saying he “hoped” to play at this year’s Masters.

As Woods sat in a police cruiser, an officer talked to him about golf, mentioning a putter that Woods said he had won “14 majors with.”

Then the officer asked Woods if he planned to play at the Masters, and he replied, “Hopefully.”

Someone associated with Woods approached the group to speak and added, “It’s up to all of you.” »

Woods will not play at Augusta National Golf Club next week for the first major of the season, something Augusta National president Fred Ridley confirmed earlier this week after the five-time green jacket winner was toppled and arrested.

“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being,” Ridley said in a statement. “Even though Tiger won’t be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta.”

There was a chance Woods was trying to play at the Masters, and he clearly had that mindset before his fall.

Woods released a statement announcing he was stepping away from golf to “seek treatment” following his arrest for drunk driving, which resulted in charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a blood alcohol test (BAL) after law enforcement said his vehicle collided with another while he was driving impaired.

Woods issued the statement after pleading not guilty, waiving his right to an indictment and demanding a jury trial Tuesday.

“I know and understand the gravity of the situation I find myself in today,” Woods said in a statement posted on social media.

“I am taking some time off to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary for me to prioritize my well-being and work towards a lasting recovery.

“I am committed to taking the time necessary to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and I ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself at this time.”

Woods was found with prescription opioids in his pocket, body camera footage showed. Deputies with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office reported observing several signs of impairment following the crash. They noted that Woods was “sweating profusely,” that his movements appeared “lethargic and slow” and that his eyes were “bloodshot and glassy” and “extremely dilated” after removing his sunglasses.

Deputies conducted field sobriety tests with Woods while he sat on the bumper of a car, and one deputy had his finger in the air while Woods, while gasping, tried to follow with his eyes.

The arrest marked Woods’ second drunk driving arrest in the past decade. In 2017, he was taken into custody, also on Jupiter Island, after taking prescription drugs and falling asleep behind the wheel of a moving car at 3 a.m.

Woods was also involved in a rollover accident in 2021 that resulted in serious leg injuries and emergency surgeries, something he was alluding to during field sobriety tests.

Woods has also signed up for the U.S. Senior Open, according to Golf League teammate Kevin Kisner, which is scheduled for early July.
