- Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins says he’s already studying how to send data centers to space
- Sam Altman of OpenAI sees it as a “chimera”, Elon Musk is optimistic
- Space data centers would solve many of today’s problems
Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins revealed that his company’s executives are already discussing plans to put data centers in space.
Robbins clearly supports the idea, noting that space could remove some of Earth’s major constraints such as electricity, cooling and land availability. Abundant solar energy and fewer community objections are among the highlights (although a different type of objection could likely arise).
And Robbins isn’t the only data center influencer who believes so: “Sam Altman is the one who says, ‘I don’t think they should be in their backyard,'” he told Nilay Patel. The edge.

Cisco is actively exploring installing data centers in space
Although Altman may be skeptical about locating data centers in space, SpaceX’s Elon Musk is a major supporter. Asked if he would believe Altman, who claims space data centers are a “pipe dream,” or Elon Musk, Robbins said, “I wouldn’t bet against Elon.” »
These campuses are generally considered noisy and energy-intensive establishments, particularly unpopular locally. Hyperscalers face growing public opposition and concerns about environmental impacts, but skyrocketing usage is a contradictory trend that requires continued developments.
However, Cisco is still resolving some technical challenges related to temperature, atmospheric conditions and launch logistics.
There is also a growing demand for data sovereignty, and it is unclear how space-based data centers might play a role in infrastructure design moving from global systems to localized deployments.
As for the next steps, there are obviously many. “We’re just starting to make sure that atmospheric issues, temperatures, all those things are taken into account,” the CEO said, emphasizing that “we don’t even know everything we need to do yet.”
“Absolutely,” Robbins concluded when asked if we should put data centers in space.
