The CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS) said workers around the world must ensure they are constantly adapting and evolving to stay relevant in the age of AI.
Talk to humans[X] conference in San Francisco, Matt Garman once again highlighted the enormous impact he and his company hope AI tools will have on the world of work.
“AI is going to transform every business, every job, every way we work, every interaction with products,” Garman said, “it’s going to drive massive transformation.”

“More to come”
When asked if he thought the potential of AI technology was overrated, Garman was in a typically exuberant mood, noting: “People ask me that all the time. I think it’s one of the funniest questions I get asked.”
However, when asked about return on investment and success, Garman admitted that despite strong investment and interest, some businesses will still fail.
“The last big bubble we had was the Internet,” Garman said. “Last time I checked, the Internet is still pretty big. It’s not like it’s gone.
“There will be AI startups valued at billions of dollars that don’t make it. I’m 100% sure that’s true. This has been true for every venture round, and some will be the biggest companies in ten years.”
Garman added that internally at Amazon, software developers report being about 4.5 times more efficient with AI, noting: “It’s not an efficiency that people just give up on…And I think there’s more to come.”
Speaking about what’s to come, Garman said his advice to those entering the workforce today is to stay flexible and adapt to new situations.
“Perhaps the best skill one can acquire is learning how to learn,” he said. “Learn new skills. Don’t assume that everything you’ve learned will be valid for the next 40 years.”
“When there’s a technology disruption like this, it effectively takes all the existing business, the billions of dollars of SaaS products and software, and throws them on the table, it means everyone has to win again. So it’s extremely disruptive for incumbents. But it’s also a huge opportunity.”
