- Fragmented tools cost workers 51 days a year, and AI doesn’t necessarily help
- Companies need to give their employees clearer guidance and use cases
- Policy Failure Leads to Use of Shadow AI Among Enthusiast Workers
New research claims that the main problem with AI in the workplace is not the technology, the chips, or the data centers, but rather the humans who use it.
A new WalkMe report claims that employees lose an average of 51 days per year to technology friction caused by bad tools, poor user experience and other system issues – the equivalent of 7.9 hours per week, or about a day’s work.
The problem has also worsened since last year, although most companies have now invested in AI to varying degrees. But rather than criticizing AI for its inability to deal with current inefficiencies, WalkMe argues that humans simply need to reframe their view of technology.

AI’s biggest problem is the human element
The report explains in detail that the main problems with artificial intelligence are lack of skills and poor integration. Companies are also failing to get a handle on AI internally, with poor governance, policies and procedures leading to workers willing to experiment leaving and using unapproved (phantom) AI.
With 88% of leaders believing their employees have the right tools for the job, and only 21% of employees agreeing, there is a clear divide at the organizational level.
“Technology will continue to improve,” wrote CEO Dan Adika. “What will not improve on its own is the human side: the lack of trust, the lack of governance, the question of who acts, when and with what safeguards.”
Looking ahead, WalkMe says investment doesn’t equal impact, and simply investing more money into more tools won’t work. To close this gap, companies must drive adoption before introducing more tools, integrate AI into workflows to resolve existing technology frictions, and provide clear guidance to workers.
