In view of the ongoing ninth and tenth class exams, Karachi Matric Board chairman Ghulam Hussain has issued guidelines for exam centers regarding girl students.

According to the instructions, female students appearing for the examinations will not be required to remove their burqas or abayas at any examination centre.

The president said no complaints of cheating had been received involving female candidates; such measures are unnecessary.

He further warned that strict action would be taken if any exam center made female students remove their burqa or abaya during exams.

The President also ordered that no male invigilators be appointed in examination centers meant for female students.

Annual exams for grade 9 and 10 students began last Friday across the city. No less than 385,000 students take the exams.

The authorities have promised strict monitoring. Section 144 has been imposed around exam centers to maintain order, mobile phones are completely banned and even nearby photo shops remain closed to avoid any risk of cheating.

However, the final exams have been mired in controversy, with widespread allegations of paper leaks, corruption and serious administrative failures disrupting students’ ability to take the exams fairly.
