Lauren Sánchez has broken her silence on the outfit that set the Internet ablaze, and she’s keeping it up, although she made a quick note for future reference.
Addressing the New York Timesthe helicopter pilot and wife of Jeff Bezos looked back on the look she wore to Donald Trump’s second inauguration last year: a fluffy white Schiaparelli coat over a white McQueen pantsuit, layered over lace that attracted far more attention than she expected.
Sánchez said she expected the package to be considered conservative. “I was super proud of myself,” she said.
The reaction was swift and came from several directions.
Megyn Kelly was among the harshest critics.
“Have some dignity and some respect for your surroundings in your situation,” she said at the time. “No one should be talking about your boobs. Sorry. They should be talking about the inauguration.”
Sánchez placed some of the blame on circumstances beyond her control, noting that the last-minute switch to an indoor ceremony changed the context of the look.
But obviously the criticism hasn’t been particularly harsh.
She responded quietly by liking supportive comments on social media, and a friend said Page six the reaction just wasn’t something that kept him up at night.
“Lauren doesn’t care. She does what she wants,” the source said.
Sánchez herself seemed genuinely perplexed by the urge to criticize.
“I can never imagine writing something mean on someone’s Instagram. It would break my heart,” she told the Times. “I just want to give everyone flowers. Why not ?
This wasn’t the first time a Sánchez outfit caused a stir at a political event.
She faced similar criticism for wearing a red, lace-corseted Rasario dress to a state dinner at the White House in 2024.
She seems to have learned at least one lesson from this combined experience. “I understand,” she said. “No lace in the White House. Noted.”
