FIFA has responded strongly to New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherill after he released a critical video saying FIFA should pay for NJ Transit fans’ tickets to World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium this summer.
In his video, in response to “headlines” about $100 train tickets, Sherill said that FIFA “should pay for the rides” since NJ Transit is charged $48 million, while FIFA will make $11 billion.
FIFA said it was “quite surprised” by Sherill’s “approach…to fan transport” before presenting the “agreements with the host cities”.

“The initial agreements with host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup signed in 2018 required free transport for supporters to all matches. Recognizing the financial pressure this placed on host cities, FIFA in 2023 adjusted the requirements of the host agreement in all host cities as follows: all match ticket holders and accredited persons must be able to access transport (public or additional planned) at cost to enable go to stadiums on match days,” the statement begins.
“FIFA has worked for years with host cities on transportation and mobility plans, including advocating for millions of dollars in federal funding to support host cities with transportation.
“The FIFA World Cup will attract millions of fans to North America, with the associated economic impact. Many fans will travel to NYNJ to enjoy the eight scheduled matches. FIFA is not aware of any other major event previously held at NYNJ Stadium, including other major sports, world concert tours, etc., where organizers would have had to pay for fan transportation.”

MetLife Stadium will host eight matches, including the final on July 19. Penn Station will also be subject to severe restrictions on game days, when only game attendees will be allowed to enter the NJ Transit portion of the Manhattan station.
Parking has also been banned at MetLife Stadium despite thousands of spaces at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, as the lots will be used for fan activation and security.
Current prices from East Rutherford to Penn Station are just under $13.
