The victim died of multiple gunshot wounds at Jinnah Hospital; attackers remain at large

A young doctor was shot dead near Mehran Hotel on Dr Daud Pota Road in Karachi later Monday night in what police described as a suspected targeted attack.
The victim was identified as Dr Sarang, 36, son of Muhammad Hussain and resident of Karachi. A first information report (FIR) was registered today at Artillery Maidan police station under sections 34 (common intention) and 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code, on the complaint of the victim’s brother Sarmad Hussain.
According to the FIR, the incident took place around 11:55 p.m. on Monday. Dr Sarang’s wife, who was present at the scene, said the couple was traveling in an autorickshaw along Dr Daud Pota Road towards Karachi University Center after the doctor returned.
Quoting his sister-in-law, the complainant said that near Mehran Hotel, a white car with an unidentified registration number intercepted their autorickshaw. He added that a man got out of the back seat, pulled out a pistol and opened fire on Dr Sarang before fleeing in the same vehicle.
The FIR stated that the driver of the car was not identified and his wife escaped narrowly unhurt.
Dr. Sarang received gunshot wounds to the chest and three other injuries to his legs. He was taken to Jinnah Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The complainant said that he was informed about the death of his brother by his nephew over the phone, after which he immediately went to Karachi.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Zulfiqar Ali confirmed the incident and said the body had been formally examined.
He said the crime scene was inspected and physical evidence, including spent ammunition, was taken into custody. A sealed bag was also recovered from near the incident site.
Investigators said they are investigating the case from multiple angles and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspects, who remain at large.
Darul Sehat Hospital, where Dr Sarang was a senior registrar, condemned the incident and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely death of Dr Sarang Memon, Senior Registrar of LCMD and Darul Sehat Hospital, who was shot dead last night,” the hospital said in a statement.
He added that Dr. Sarang joined the institution in July 2025 and, within a short span, earned respect for his professionalism, dedication and compassionate care of patients, terming his death a huge loss to the medical community.
