Super Mario Galaxy movie could have a big influence on upcoming games, according to Nintendo game director Shigeru Miyamoto.
In a recent interview with Nintendo Dream Web, Miyamoto told fans that Princess Peach’s story could be expanded upon in future games, using Super Mario Galaxy movie as a point of reference.
Miyamoto said: “Because we don’t know what kind of game we’re going to make next with our characters, having too many character settings would become a constraint. I’m OK with being bound by gameplay, but I don’t want to be bound by creating a story, which is why I haven’t made movies for many years.

“So, before making this movie, I hadn’t decided on the character’s story, but now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to develop the character in different ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere to the settings created in the movie as much as possible in the next games.”
In Super Mario Galaxy moviewe learn that Princess Peach is the sister of galactic traveler Rosalina, and that they were both born from stardust. At very young ages, the two sisters were separated when Peach was sent to live in the Mushroom Kingdom for her own safety.
This was a huge revelation for fans of the game, and it looks like it will be firmly ingrained in the character’s canon moving forward.
Miyamoto also responded to bad reviews of the Super Mario Galaxy movie
Look on it
This is good news for those who enjoyed Super Mario Galaxy moviebut there’s a chance not everyone will be happy, as reviews for the film have been pretty poor, averaging 43% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The audience score is very different, however, since the film has 89% on the Popcornmeter. So this turned out to be a very controversial take on the much-loved video game characters.
In the same interview with Nintendo Dream Web, Miyamoto addressed some of the bad reviews of the Super Mario Galaxy film, which has a lower approval rating than its predecessor.
He said: “The situations are similar, aren’t they? I actually thought the critics’ criticism of the first film was understandable. But I thought this time it would be different… and it was even harsher than last time, which I found strange.
“People from other media come in and work hard to liven up the film industry. So it’s really strange that those who try to liven up the film industry are so passive.”
Despite the mixed reactions, it looks like movies and games are going to become closely intertwined, so what we saw in Super Mario Galaxy movie could certainly influence future Nintendo games. We’ll just have to wait and see what that looks like.
