Ethan Hawke has opened up about the experience he had walking his daughter Maya down the aisle at her surprise Valentine’s Day wedding, and admitted the moment left him completely speechless.
The 55-year-old actor reflected on the occasion while speaking to Entertainment tonight at the Time100 Gala in New York on Thursday, April 23.
“It was quite amusing,” he said, before quickly finding language more appropriate to what he had actually felt.
“What really does it, you know, is walking your daughter down the aisle. … I’ve had a lot of feelings in my life, and it’s one that I don’t have words to describe what it feels like. I don’t have a vocabulary for it. I felt like I was 13 and experiencing life for the first time, you know?”
He was just as warm towards the man his daughter had chosen.
“The man she married is an extraordinary young man, Christian, so I’m a very lucky person,” Hawke said.
Maya, 27, married singer-songwriter Christian Lee Hutson, 35, in a surprise ceremony in New York on Valentine’s Day, attended by her and her parents. Stranger Things castmates including Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer and Joe Keery.
The couple had been linked since 2023 and had apparently kept their engagement entirely private until the wedding day itself.
Maya first publicly addressed marriage in March at the premiere of her film. Wishful thinkingcalling married life “absolutely fantastic”.
She talked about what made the relationship so natural.
“I feel so lucky to have found my best friend and to have someone I can tell everything to. It makes something like getting married feel like, ‘Oh, sure,’ you know, not ‘What?'”
She previously offered some simple advice on the subject during a 2024 appearance on The Zach Sang Show. “I can’t recommend hanging out with your friends enough. It’s the best.”
Ethan shares Maya and son Levon, 24, with ex-wife Uma Thurman, and has two other daughters, Clementine, 17, and Indiana, 14, with current wife Ryan Shawhughes.
