- Spotify mobile apps get new playlist features
- You can now create and manage playlists on the go
- Some, but not all, Android and iOS users see the update
The latest Spotify update rolling out to users is one I’ve been waiting for for years and one that will really make a difference to listening on the go: the ability to create and manage playlist folders from the mobile apps.
Although you could previously view playlist folders on mobile, you couldn’t create, edit or delete them – something that’s changing, 15 years after the feature was introduced, as Android Authority reports.
Discussions on Reddit suggest that some people are seeing the update, although it apparently hasn’t rolled out to everyone yet. “I’ve wanted this for a long, long time now,” says one poster, summarizing the general sentiment of most Spotify users.

Since there’s been no official word from Spotify, it’s possible this is just a limited test at the moment (code for the upgrade was actually spotted by Android Authority in March). It may take a while for everyone to see it on their phones and tablets.

You can now create folders on mobile (and move playlists into them) from r/truespotify
I’m using Spotify for Android in the UK and I don’t see the option yet – apparently it appears if you press the button + (more) on the Library page. You will then be prompted to choose a name for your new folder, which will then be added to the list.
There are also a few additional tweaks worth mentioning. In addition to being able to create new folders for your playlists, the update adds the ability to move existing playlists into them, so you can tidy up your library without going to Spotify on the desktop.
Users have also spotted the ability to play all playlists in a particular folder in one go and cycle through all tracks in the entire folder. This matches what you can already do in desktop apps and web.apps.
Hopefully this is something everyone gets sooner rather than later: 15 years is a long time to wait for a feature to migrate from desktop to mobile. This may be part of Spotify’s ongoing 20th anniversary celebrations.
