The story of Royce Keys was told well as he made his way to SmackDown.
The 6-foot-1 East Palo Alto, California native began working in the independent scene and worked his way up to All Elite Wrestling when his mother suffered a shocking fatal overdose in 2021. He continued to push and work, knowing that his grandparents and his mother’s spirit were still with him as he made his WWE debut in 2026.

“I like to say I was born to be a professional wrestler and I was born to work in this business as a sports entertainer,” he told PK Press Club Digital. “So my grandparents moved from Mississippi to San Francisco and they lived right across the street from the Cow Palace. … I grew up hearing about ‘Big Chief’ Peter Maivia, Ray Stevens, Pat Patterson, Kenji Shibuya, Pepper Gomez and so ever since I could remember anything, wrestling was one of my earliest memories. It brought a lot of joy and happiness and success to my life.”
Keys made his debut with the company as a surprise entrant in the men’s Royal Rumble match in Saudi Arabia. He eliminated an opponent before being eliminated himself.
He said going through the curtain was an experience like any other.
“For me it was a huge test of new audience, new style, being so far from home I didn’t know what to expect. Probably one of the few times I’ve been nervous in my life,” he recalls. “But once I was able to walk down that aisle, it all felt so natural, walking into the ring and being there. All eyes were on me. It was really rewarding. Have you ever felt like you were supposed to do something? I had that feeling in that moment.”
Keys stayed off-screen for a while as he struggled to get underneath him in a WWE ring.

After working a few dark matches, Keys defeated Berto in his first appearance on SmackDown. He then appeared in and won the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal the day before WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.
He said he brings a certain X-factor that sets him apart among the other big men on the roster.
“I think about the intensity, the intimidation, the fear, you know, when I’m in the ring, I tend to go straight to the point. I think some of the things that I do in the ring, not only do people in the arenas say, ‘Ohh,’ they feel it, but people at home also feel it through their television screens,” he said. “It’s just a lot of domination. I think my life, everything I’ve been through in my life has prepared me for this point and I intend to be that monster, or I like to say, as they say around the block, I’d like to be that ‘monster’ that’s going to change or help or elevate the game.”
Keys said he would make his opponents suffer as he looked to qualify for the title shot – whether it was the Undisputed WWE Championship or the United States Championship.
“I think all of the above,” he told PK Press Club Digital. “I have a motto that I’ve lived by since I was a kid that was taught by the Olympics and a lot of guys here (in the Bay Area): I take whatever I want. Whatever I want to take or see, I’ll take it, whether it’s championships, or if it hurts people, whether it’s dominating the SmackDown brand and dominating whoever else wants to come, go to another brand and dominate there. My life has put me in this position and everything I’ve been through in my life has brought me to this point and I don’t think anyone could stop me.”
