IO Interactive responded to criticism regarding the design of the 007 First Light limited edition DualSense wireless controller, confirming that it’s not what some fans think.
Last month, Sony revealed the beautiful new DualSense, which launches alongside the game on May 27 for $84.99 / £74.99 / €84.99. The gold and black design features a “007” logo on the touchpad and is surrounded by straight lines extending across the controller.
The design was thought to be inspired by the iconic opening of the James Bond films, which typically show 007 crossing the screen from the perspective of inside a gun barrel, before drawing his pistol.

However, after the announcement, some fans criticized the design, believing that if this were the case, the lines should actually be curved and spiral, not straight.
“I was immediately bothered by the fact that the design, which clearly attempts to mimic the iconic opening, didn’t feature ‘rifling’ (the swirly part in the barrel that stabilizes the bullet),” one user said on Reddit.
Another responded by saying: “The idea of a 007 themed controller, with a design inspired by the inside of a barrel, NOT referencing the 007 intro, stretches my credulity a little too much lol.”
Now, in an interview with Eurogamer, 007 First Light Art director Rasmus Poulsen set the record straight and confirmed that the design was not intended to simply imitate a gun barrel.
“The thing about straight lines is that anyone can do just a gun barrel, right? But in that sense, I think it’s actually very telling that it’s not a straight gun barrel, because it’s an icon of the franchise,” Poulsen said.
“Actually, it doesn’t exist anywhere,” he added, suggesting that stripes are not seen in the real world or in the Bond films beyond the iconic title cards. “I mean, it’s inside every gun, sure – but now I’m getting ahead of myself.”
The art director goes on to explain the true intention behind the design, revealing that it is a reference to the game’s UI and its “light and shadow” themes. First of all Lightget it?
“What we were trying to do with this was reference more of the feel of the UI of the game,” Poulsen explained. “So rather than just creating a franchise cachet, it relates to our product, in the sense that it has that sense of user interface – and then it has more of a, dare I say, ‘Sun’ flavor, referencing the title. And you saw the title sequence. So there are some things about light and shadow that we wanted to play with.”
