The most economical airline operating in America has announced a major decision.
Spirit Airlines announces closure of operations, canceling all flights on May 2, 2026.
The airline has been facing a serious economic crisis since the covid-19 pandemic.
Spirit, repeatedly in recent years, has warned of its poor economic health, saying there were “substantial doubts” about its ability to continue operations.
The airline has filed for bankruptcy twice, most recently in August 2025.
In 2025, Spirit was ranked as the eighth largest U.S. airline in terms of number of seats.
The airline was widely recognized as offering ultra-cheap base fares in the United States, charging extra for things like carry-on bags.
What happens to stranded passengers now?
Spirit booked about 9,000 flights from May 2 through the end of the month, totaling 1.8 million seats, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.
Thus, over the coming month, around 300 flights and 60,000 passengers will be affected each day.
This sudden cancellation will further drive up prices for U.S. domestic flights across the aviation industry.
Now, with Spirit canceling the 2% of domestic U.S. flights it was scheduled to operate this summer, fares will likely increase across the industry.
Over the past 25 years, eight major U.S. airlines have filed for bankruptcy, but a complete airline shutdown is far more unusual.
Spirit’s closure is believed to be the first closure of a major U.S. airline since the bankruptcy of Midway Airlines in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
According to CNN, other US airlines have mobilized to support affected passengers.
However, the outlet did not mention what the policy would be for those airlines, but did mention American Airlines officials, who said they “immediately implemented fare caps on main cabin tickets for Spirit routes where we also offer nonstop service.”
