- Android Auto widgets should be coming soon
- They were spotted hiding in the latest Android Auto app
- The available widgets correspond to the standard Android ones
With the Gemini AI upgrade now live for Android Auto users worldwide, Google is turning its attention to another feature of the vehicle dashboard interface: widgets that match those on your phone’s home screen.
The first signs of this were spotted months ago, but in the latest version of the Android Auto app, the folks at Android Authority have spotted more hidden code that suggests widget support isn’t far away now.
When the feature goes live, there will be a new Car Widgets option in Android Auto settings, based on newly discovered screen images. From there, you’re taken to a widget picker similar to the one on a phone’s home screen.

It’s unclear when Google might decide to start rolling out this feature to users, but it seems pretty finished. The Google I/O 2026 event will take place later this month on May 19-20, which would be an appropriate time for an announcement like this.

Based on the code and screens discovered by Android Authority, it looks like many of the widgets available on Android itself will also be supported by the Android Auto interface – and I can’t wait to try them out.
From countdown timers to calendar overviews, from battery graphs to fitness information, I use widgets on my phone’s home screen extensively. Also having them on my car dashboard would be really helpful.
Space is of course limited on an Android Auto screen, so it will be interesting to see how Google actually implements this, especially if Google Maps is in navigation mode, which will necessarily have to take up a lot of the real estate on the screen.
Hopefully Google will be able to implement this in a way that isn’t too clunky – and in a way that doesn’t require any further updates to squash any lingering bugs – and if it does, I’ll add widgets immediately.
