Pakistan and Azerbaijan reaffirm close ties

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of bilateral relations.

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan and Azerbaijan on Tuesday reiterated their commitment to deepening cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade and investment, energy and people-to-people contacts.

The development came as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a telephone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, according to a statement from the media wing of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive trajectory of bilateral relations.

During their “warmest and most cordial conversation”, the two leaders exchanged greetings and reaffirmed the strong bonds of brotherly friendship between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, the statement said.

The Prime Minister conveyed his best wishes to President Aliyev for the success of the upcoming World Urban Forum to be held in Baku next week.

He expressed confidence that the forum, under the leadership of Azerbaijan, would serve as a valuable platform to advance the global urban development agenda.

He noted that unfortunately urgent commitments would prevent him from personally attending the event, but he had ensured that Pakistan was well represented at the forum.

They also discussed regional developments of common interest, particularly ongoing peace efforts in the Middle East.

President Aliyev expressed deep gratitude for Pakistan’s “remarkably successful initiatives” to bring about a ceasefire between Iran and the United States. This clearly reflects the international community’s confidence in Pakistan and its leaders, he said.

The two leaders agreed to maintain close contact and look forward to meeting in person later this year.

The Prime Minister also reiterated his cordial invitation to President Aliyev to undertake an official visit to Pakistan as soon as possible.
