- “News briefs” will appear on the Google TV for you page
- Will recommend related videos on “most important news”
- Only in the United States, and tested only with certain users
Google experiences news summaries and AI recommendations that you can see on your Google TV. It seems to be a very bad idea.
The functionality, called News Briefs, was spotted by Android Authority on Google’s assistance pages. He will use “Gemini models and human evaluation” to provide commented overviews of the main topical subjects and “related YouTube videos from reliable sources of information”.
Until now, it has only been tested with selected users and only in the United States. And I hope that at the end of the test, they will kill it by fire.
The problem with AI news is simple
The problem with AI is that, for lack of a better description, it is a huge communication problem machine. To take a fairly harmless example, Apple’s big titles on AI were a disaster, and its summaries on AI on my iPhone are often hilarious and wrong.
Over times, we see very clear evidence that we cannot trust AI at the moment. Sometimes it’s funny – as the Associated Press discovered in the summer of 2024, Gemini will be happy to tell you that astronauts have played with cats on the moon – but sometimes it’s much more serious ; The same report notes that Google’s AI shared conspiracy theory that Barack Obama is Muslim.
The problem with AI is that what we are told is AI … This is not the case. It is like a very powerful automatic correction machine, a predict machine, and when its data is bad – and this is often the case – it then produces bad information with great confidence. And online, there is a whole ecosystem based on the production of bad information and their introduction to social media such as YouTube.
Given the history of YouTube in terms of recommendations – NBC News is one of the many organizations that have shown a political and religious bias in the recommended content to people, for example – by being offered recommendations for News based on AI even when we did not ask to see. The new seems terrifying.
And in addition to that, I receive many new nightmares all day, every day on my phone-maybe if I turned on my television, it’s to escape, to be distracted or to entertain me . Some people like to look at the news channels continuously (or of the news) all day, but some of us use our TV to concentrate elsewhere.
There are enough bad news in the world right now. I really hope Google TV will not add more.
