MotoGP rider Alex Marquez crashes and flips in mid-air during race

Spanish MotoGP rider Alex Marquez was involved in a serious crash during a race at the Catalan Grand Prix on Sunday.

Marquez collided with then-race leader Pedro Acosta as the two vied for position. His motorcycle overturned several times after being thrown to the ground. Acosta’s bike slowed down unexpectedly and Márquez was unable to avoid him on the track.

The motorcyclist was thrown into the air as his vehicle tore apart.

Marquez was conscious after the crash and was taken to the hospital for “further evaluation,” according to race officials. His injuries are not life-threatening, according to Spanish media.

Márquez’s MotoGP compatriot Johann Zarco was also sent to hospital following an accident.

“Update on Alex Márquez’s physical conditions: marginal fracture of C7; further evaluation will be completed next week. Fracture of the right clavicle; it will be stabilized with a plate. He will be operated on today by the team at the General Hospital of Catalonia,” his team said in a message on X.

Zarco’s leg got tangled in the back of another rider’s motorcycle. He got stuck when the bike overturned several times. He was taken to hospital for further evaluation.

Red flags went out after both incidents.

Fabio Di Giannantonio managed to take first place despite pieces of Marquez’s bike hitting him during the fall.
