Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, reflected on the success of Grand Theft Auto 5 and believes players keep coming back to the game because it’s a frequently updated social experience.
Speaking in a new interview with podcaster David Senra, Zelnick said that “most people believe” that RGT is “the most valuable entertainment intellectual property ever created”, and revealed that the total income from the latest installment, GTA 5it’s “a lot”.
The game, released in 2013, has sold over 225 million copies and is often touted as one of the best-selling video games of all time. It still has tens of thousands of players today, often appearing among the most played titles on the popular PC gaming platform Steam.
According to Zelnick, “the reason people continue to play is because the game is constantly being updated” — referring to GTA 5the constantly evolving multiplayer offering of, Grand Theft Auto Online. “The most recent content pack was awesome,” he added.
“You can actually talk and connect and play together,” he continued. “People don’t realize that online games are highly social experiences.”
To illustrate his point, Zelnick also shared an anecdote about his elderly mother playing bridge online, chatting with other players she had never met.
These comments come ahead of the highly anticipated launch of the upcoming RGT game, Grand Theft Auto 6on November 19, 2026. It is expected to generate billions of dollars in revenue and sell millions of copies in a matter of days.
