More than 164,000 Pakistanis expelled from the Gulf in 5 years

Mahmood Khan Achakzai said the government had not responded to the opposition’s demands for access to the PTI founder.

ISLAMABAD:

More than 164,000 Pakistanis have been deported from various Gulf countries over the past five years, according to official data presented to the National Assembly on Monday.

The Interior Ministry informed the House that Saudi Arabia topped the list with 108,029 expulsions, followed by the UAE with 40,497, Oman with 9,814, Qatar with 2,971 and Bahrain with 2,779 cases.

The data was tabled during a heated session in which opposition members intensified their protests against the refusal to meet PTI founder Imran Khan and alleged restrictions on access to medical care.

The House, presided over by Deputy Speaker Ghulam Mustafa Shah, witnessed repeated slogans, a sit-in in front of the Speaker’s dais and an unusual symbolic “parallel meeting” organized by opposition lawmakers led by Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai.

Speaking on the ground, Mahmood Khan Achakzai said the government had not responded to the opposition’s demands regarding access to the PTI founder and health concerns.

He warned that the opposition would not allow the House to function or participate in the budget process. The opposition then staged a walkout and also highlighted the lack of quorum.

Meanwhile, the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency also submitted its report to the House, revealing that more than 531,000 complaints were received between 2023 and today.

The report said more than 5,700 cases were recorded during this period, while 7,600 people were arrested in the last four years for cybercrime-related offenses.

Besides, the rising cost of private healthcare in Islamabad was also discussed in the House.
