ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced public holidays on the occasion of Eid ul Adha, a Cabinet Division notification said on Wednesday.
“The Prime Minister had the pleasure of declaring May 26, 27 and 28, 2026 (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) public holidays on the occasion of [Eid ul Adha]”, the notification said.
Pakistan would observe Eid ul Adha on May 27, the Ruet-i-Hilal Central Moon Sighting Committee (RHC) announced on May 17 after sighting the crescent in the month of Zilhaj.
The announcement was made after a committee meeting held at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in Karachi, under the chairmanship of Maulana Azad.
Addressing a press conference, President de Ruet said credible reports of moon sightings had been received from several parts of the country.
βIt was decided by consensus that the first Zilhaj 1447 AH would be held on Monday, May 18 and Eid ul Adha would be celebrated on Wednesday, May 27,β he said.
Eid ul Adha, also known as the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’, commemorates the Quranic story of Prophet Ibrahim’s (PBUH) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah, a test of faith which was divinely interrupted and replaced by a ram.
Additionally, the occasion is celebrated with prayers, family gatherings and charitable acts, including the ritual sacrifice of livestock, with the meat distributed to relatives, friends and the underprivileged.
