So who lives to tell the tale? And who among The boys“A large set falls at the final hurdle? I’ll provide answers to these and other questions from now on. Consider this your one and only warning, so: full spoilers immediately follow for the latest episode of the popular Prime Video show, titled “Blood and Bone.”
Does Homelander die in episode 8 of season 5 of The Boys?
Yes, the main villain of the series is killed The boys the last hurray of season 5.
In a final showdown with Billy Butcher and Kimiko in the Oval Office, Homelander has the upper hand over the duo despite his numerical disadvantage. However, the battle is turned around when his ex-son Ryan, who has an identical power set to Homelander, who is Ryan’s biological father, arrives on the scene to help the titular team end Homelander’s autocracy.
Eventually, Ryan and Butcher manage to subdue Homelander long enough for Kimiko to use her burgeoning nuclear bomb-like superpower on him. This ability, which she gained after Sister Sage and Frenchie recently died, successfully recreated the experiment that gave Soldier Boy a similar superhuman trait in the 1950s.
Regardless, after a vision of Frenchie helps Kimiko focus all of her energies to unleash her new superpower, the resulting explosion not only hits Homelander, Butcher, and Ryan, but removes Supe’s creator Compound V serum from their bodies, thus permanently depriving them.
Deadly once again – remember, Homelander took a dose of V1, which grants immortality to anyone it is administered to, in Season 5 Episode 6 – and deprived of his Superman-like abilities, Homelander pleads for his life. Predictably, his words fall on deaf ears with Butcher, who delivers a brutal beating of his nemesis in retaliation for Frenchie’s death in the penultimate episode of season 5.
With a cowering and bloodied Homelander leaning against the destroyed US President’s table in the Oval Office, Butcher prepares to deliver the final blow. Saying “this is for Becca”, aka Butcher’s wife who Homelander sexually assaulted years ago, Butcher rams a crowbar into Homelander’s skull, before removing it with such force that he spills the latter’s brain and blood all over the floor and the aforementioned desk.
Does Billy Butcher die in The Boys season 5 finale?
Yes, Butcher also perishes in the TV show on one of the best streaming services.
Later that day, as the eponymous group celebrates saving the world, Butcher runs away to spend some quiet time with Ryan. However, despite Butcher’s attempts to make peace with his deceased wife’s only child, Ryan rejects Butcher’s suggestion that they start a new life together, with Butcher as Ryan’s legal guardian and leaves.
Upset by Ryan’s rejection, Butcher soon learns that his dog Terror is also dead. Angry at this emotional double whammy, and believing it is only a matter of time before another Homelander is created and determined to bend humanity to his will, Butcher locates Supe’s killer virus and leaves without telling the rest of the group where he is going.
Luckily, Hughie not only learns that Butcher is gone, but also sees him heading towards Vought Tower. There, the duo reunites and Butcher tells Hughie that he added the virus to the water that feeds the building’s fire sprinkler system. When the Supes arrive for work at Vought the next day, he will activate the system via a remote trigger, which will kill those who cannot escape. Meanwhile, the fleeing Supes will spread the contagion across the world, eradicating all superhumans from the planet, including Starlight, Kimiko and Hughie’s longtime girlfriend.
Hughie is unable to dissuade Butcher from his genocidal plan so, unsurprisingly, a fight ensues – a fight that Butcher easily wins. However, as he prepares to activate the sprinklers ahead of schedule to prevent Hughie from arresting him, Butcher mistakes Hughie for his deceased brother Vinnie. The delay gives Hughie enough time to grab his handgun, which Butcher had disarmed him from, and shoot Butcher twice in the chest.
As Butcher collapses to the ground and begins to bleed, Hughie apologizes profusely for doing what he did. Butcher, however, understands why he did this and, after Hughie comforts Butcher in his final moments, the latter takes his last breath before succumbing to his injuries.
Who else dies in The Boys series finale?
Despite the aforementioned couple and the Terror, The boysThe season 5 finale only kills off two other characters: The Deep and Oh Father.
As for the former, he is killed by a giant squid after Starlight uses her powers to push him into the sea. Remember that ocean wildlife blamed The Deep for causing the rupture of a giant oil pipeline, which killed billions of underwater creatures, in Episode 6 of Season 5. It was Black Noir II, whom The Deep murdered in the aforementioned episode, who actually destroyed that pipeline but, despite The Deep’s protests in episode 7 of season 5, his former aquatic allies don’t believe him. They also tell him that if he ever sets foot in the ocean again, they will kill him. So when Starlight uses her explosion to knock him into the sea, The Deep is quickly taken care of.
As for Oh Father, he perished at the hands of Mother’s Milk. Indeed, the latter uses a titanium ball gag – powerful enough to withstand Oh Father’s sonic scream ability – on the corrupted Supe when he prepares to unleash it on Hughie. The scream is so powerful, however, that it reverberates off the ball gag and causes Oh Father’s head to explode.
What happens to everyone in the final episode of The Boys?
They survive and, for the most part, get their happy ending.
Indeed, in a montage-style epilogue, Hughie and Starlight have taken over the former’s father’s old audio-visual store and are using it as a front for their own small business “Supe for Hire”. It was revealed that they are also expecting their first child, who will be named Robin after Hughie’s ex who was killed by the A-Train in 2017. The boys‘ very first episode.
Meanwhile, Mother’s Milk becomes Ryan’s legal guardian and renews his marital vows with his life, Kimiko fulfills Frenchie’s wish before his death by moving to Marseille and adopting the bernadoodle he showed her in the penultimate chapter of season 5.
On the Vought side, Stan Edgar becomes the temporary CEO of the Supe company, while Ashley Barratt is removed from her position as US vice-president. Finally, Sister Sage, whose powers were suppressed by Kimiko’s nuclear blast ability earlier in episode 8, leaves to start a new life as a normal human being.
What happens to Soldier Boy in episode 8 of season 5 of The Boys?
He doesn’t die, if that’s what you’re asking. In fact, Soldier Boy doesn’t appear at all in the final episode of The Boys.
The reason? He was put back on ice by Homelander in the penultimate chapter of season 5. Remember, Homelander incapacitated Soldier Boy when the latter refused the former’s request to help Homelander oversee his autocracy. For this and many other countless betrayals, Homelander put his father back in his cryogenic chamber, where Soldier Boys remains… for now.
Is there a mid or post-credits scene in The Boys season 5 finale?
No. Once the end credits of “Blood and Bone” roll, there’s no end credits scene to stick with. So don’t expect to have any clues about future spin-offs in preparation at Amazon. Speaking of which…
Are there any The Boys spin-offs in development?
Yes, franchise supervisor Eric Kripke has confirmed that at least two offshoots are in active development.
The first, Vought Risingis set to premiere on Prime Video sometime in 2027. Set in the 1950s, it will reunite us with Soldier Boy, Stormfront and Bombsight – all of whom appeared at different points in the film. The boys‘ five seasons – in the early years of Vought International and the era of superhumans.
As for the other untitled project, called Boys: Mexicoit would have taken place – surprise surprise – in Mexico. Little is known about its story, its characters and/or whether it will take place in the past or present.
Finally, the only live-action spin-off released so far – Generation V – will not return for another season after its cancellation earlier this year. Kripke suggested we might see Marie, Jordan and the rest of the show’s cast again in another production, but Generation V doesn’t get a third outing himself.
