Football World Cup fever literally overtook this world when an astronaut showed off incredible space skills ahead of the global competition.
Jessica Meir of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), demonstrated an impressive aerial kick in microgravity.
The acrobatic move performed by the astronaut in microgravity stunned football fans and space enthusiasts, who praised Meir for his athletic skills.
During the “Learning with NASA” lesson, Meir explained the science behind designing the ball with a spherical shape, allowing it to fly smoothly through the air after being kicked.
To explain this behavior, the 48-year-old Swedish-American marine biologist demonstrated an incredible cycling stunt.
Football fans expressed their love, writing: “Love the demo – always wondered how the spin behaved up there without the air getting in the way.”
Another added: “It’s super cool to see NASA explaining the aerodynamics of soccer balls from the ISS! The way the panels and seams are designed to create consistent flight is fascinating. I love how space research connects to everyday sports like this. Thanks for the great explanation.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 and is co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
