Djokovic breaks silence after surprise French Open exit at Fonseca

Novak Djokovic has finally broken his silence after suffering a stunning defeat against Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca at the 2026 French Open.

The result ended his bid to win a record 25th Grand Slam title.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion was beaten in a dramatic five-set encounter in Paris, where Fonseca, 19, scored one of the biggest victories of his career to reach the latter stages of the tournament.

After the defeat, Djokovic praised Fonseca, admitting that the teenager had played better and deserved the victory after a physically demanding match.

The iconic match between the veteran star and the emerging Brazilian talent lasted almost five hours in extreme conditions at Roland Garros.

The Serbian looked in control early on after taking a two-set lead, but struggled to maintain momentum as Fonseca staged a strong comeback.

Djokovic said he was disappointed with the result, but thanked his opponent for remaining aggressive and calm during key moments of the match.

Fonseca’s victory is being described as a generational breakthrough, with the Brazilian teenager becoming the first player under the age of 20 to defeat Djokovic in a Grand Slam tournament.

This victory sends him to the next round of Roland-Garros.

The defeat also ends Djokovic’s latest attempt to extend his Grand Slam record to 25 titles.

It remains unclear whether Djokovic will continue playing or consider retirement.
