- Masters of the UniverseThe cast of does not include all popular characters
- Fan favorites like Orko conspicuous by their absence in its trailers
- The film’s director explained why they weren’t part of the main ensemble
The filmmaker behind this year Masters of the Universe The film warned fans that some of the franchise’s most popular characters will not appear in the main cast.
Speaking exclusively to TechRadar, Travis Knight admitted that he and the rest of the film’s lead creative team had some tough choices to make about who to include in the new Amazon film. Ultimately, any fan favorites that didn’t make the cut were left out because, in Knight’s own words, they “wouldn’t work within the framework of the story we’re telling.”
To be fair to Knight and company, there are a whole host of classic He-Man characters that are part of the proceedings. That said, there are some notable absentees from his ensemble, including – but not limited to – Orko, Man-E-Faces, and Merman.
Naturally, there’s no way any of the new 2026 movies will involve every famous face from the Mattel-created media property. Still, some fans were certainly disappointed when they realized their favorite character wasn’t part of the cast – especially when B-tier individuals like Ram-Man, Fisto, and Mechaneck were held back.
As confessed Masters of the Universe fan, Knight is well aware of the high esteem in which certain characters are held. But, as he told me, the film’s creators had to draw a line in the sand somewhere to ensure that its cast wasn’t overloaded, and that its plot wasn’t hampered by an immeasurable amount of character cameos.
“Movies are a time-based art,” Knight said. “You only have a limited amount of time to tell the story you want to tell, and even if it’s called Masters of the Universeit’s basically Adam’s movie and story. So there are definitely things that are beyond the limits of what you could tell in a two-and-a-half hour film – you have to be disciplined about that.”
“There were definitely things I wanted to put in the film, but they wouldn’t fit,” he continued. “It would be a distraction and it wouldn’t work as part of the story we’re telling.”
“It’s such a big world and universe, and there are so many characters that I love, so it was difficult to make this selection,” Knight added. “But I think it honors so many different forms [of the franchise]. We have characters from the comics and Dolph Lundgren’s 1987 live-action film, so this was really a way for us to pay homage to all the incredible work that’s been done in this franchise over the last 40 years. »
