Microsoft limits employee use of Claude Fable 5 due to data retention concerns

Microsoft has reportedly blocked its employees from using Claude’s recently launched Fable 5 model while legal and compliance teams review data handling.

Per Anthropic’s latest retention policy for the Mythos model class, which includes Fable 5, the company requires fast and efficient retention for security monitoring, which goes against corporate policies put in place by customers like Microsoft.

Anthropic emphasized that it must retain prompts and results for 30 days, but that content flagged by its security systems could be retained for up to two years if it was needed for investigative or enforcement purposes.

The current restriction, which applies to Microsoft employees, is in place due to concerns that insiders could share sensitive information such as customer information, company details and other confidential business information.

Fable 5 was launched following the huge success of Mythos, which was praised for its strong cybersecurity and vulnerability discovery capabilities.

However, this model was only released to a select group of partners due to concerns that it could be misused by attackers, hence the subsequent launch of the tamed Fable variant which the company describes as “safe for general use.”

While likely unrelated, Microsoft’s move to halt the Fable 5 rollout follows the recent announcement that the company was canceling Claude Code’s internal licenses, effectively moving its developers to its own GitHub Copilot CLI tools.

Together, the two changes reflect Microsoft’s desire to prioritize in-house tools over third-party alternatives, likely due to cost advantages, but a clear desire to use Anthropic’s systems also suggests the company is willing to rely on partners when necessary.

“It is not yet clear whether Microsoft’s legal teams will authorize Claude Fable for internal use”, The edge added.

Although a temporary ban is in place, internal demand could force Microsoft to change its mind. Mythos 5 and Fable 5 outperform key models like GPT-5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro and Opus 4.8 in 13 test categories, including agent coding, knowledge work and cybersecurity.
