The San Antonio Spurs were minutes away from having all the momentum of the NBA Finals, but it slipped away.
After trailing by as many as 29 points in the second half and even as many as 20 in the fourth quarter in Game 4 on Wednesday, the New York Knicks staged the greatest comeback in NBA Finals history to take a 3-1 series lead, rather than being tied at two when they returned to Texas.
The Spurs had their backs against the wall when they lost the first two games of the series at home, but they clawed back a win in Game 3 by coming back from their own seven-point deficit. But now all the momentum they had in Game 4 is gone.

Instead of being asked about the possibility of taking the series lead, Victor Wembanyama was asked Friday if he had “any idea if the group actually thinks” they could win three games in a row to win the NBA title.
Well, that makes perfect sense.
“Yeah, absolutely. Everyone thinks – everyone knows – that we’re going to do it,” Wembanyama replied.

The Knicks miraculously overcame a 29-point deficit to take a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals against the Spurs.
The 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers are the only team to make a comeback after going three games to one in the NBA Finals, defeating the Golden State Warriors 73-9 and winning two of those games in California.
Sure, the Spurs were in disbelief at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, but Wembanyama says the time for reflection is over, and they’re done with that.
“I wouldn’t say it was that hard to get through, right? Tougher than any game before, by far, that’s for sure. I mean, now we’re done with it. It’s the playoffs. There’s no time to regret things for too long,” he said.

Game 5 kicks off in San Antonio on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET. With a win, the Spurs would force a Game 6 return in New York on Tuesday night, hours after Wembanyama’s native France faces Senegal at neighboring MetLife Stadium in the World Cup.
