As the royal family stands united at Trooping the Color, Meghan’s joke about Princess Kate resurfaces.
The Duke recounted the awkward moment between Meghan and Kate in 2018 in his memoir Sparewriting: “A gaping silence threatened to swallow us all whole.”
According to Harry, the mood among the royal family was initially “good” and “upbeat” at the 2018 event, which took place just weeks after Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding.
But one brief exchange stood out. When Kate asked Meghan what she thought of her first Trooping the Color, Meghan responded with a quip.
“Kate asked Meg what she thought of her first Trooping the Color. And Meg joked: Colorful,” Harry wrote in his bestselling 2023 memoir.
Trooping the Color 2026 began on Saturday June 13 and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be in attendance.
The Susanxes have not been invited to the event in recent years since they retired as senior royals – and this year is no exception.
Buckingham Palace has reserved the iconic balcony appearance for working members of the royal family. Now, the event serves as a showcase for royals working within King Charles’s vision of a slimmer monarchy.
